Bhramari Pranayama: The Humming Bee Breath That Calms Anxiety

What Is Bhramari Pranayama?

Bhramari (sometimes spelled Bhramara) is a pranayama technique named after the Indian black bee — bhramara in Sanskrit — because the humming sound produced during the practice resembles a bee’s buzz. It involves a slow inhalation followed by a controlled exhalation through the nose while producing a sustained humming sound with closed lips.

It’s one of the more accessible pranayama practices — the basic technique can be learned in minutes, and many people notice a calming effect in the first session. It’s also one of the better-studied forms of pranayama specifically for its combination of breath and vocal vibration.

How to Practise Bhramari

Basic technique

  1. Sit comfortably with your spine upright — on the floor, on a cushion, or in a chair with your feet flat on the floor. Close your eyes.
  2. Take a slow, deep inhalation through both nostrils.
  3. On the exhalation, close your lips (teeth slightly parted or lightly together) and produce a continuous humming sound — like a bee. The sound is created in the throat; your lips remain closed throughout.
  4. The exhalation should be slow, controlled, and last as long as comfortably possible — aim for 5–8 seconds to start, extending over time.
  5. Inhale again slowly through both nostrils and repeat.
  6. Begin with 5–7 rounds. Over weeks, gradually extend to 10–15 rounds.

Shanmukhi Mudra (advanced option)

Traditional practice uses Shanmukhi Mudra — a hand gesture that closes the six “gates” of perception to internalise the sound. Thumbs gently close the ears; index fingers rest on the closed eyelids; middle fingers rest beside the nose; ring and little fingers rest above and below the lips. This intensifies the vibrational sensation. Begin without the mudra and introduce it once the basic technique is established.

Pronunciation of the hum

The hum is typically a nasal “mmm” rather than a guttural “hmm.” Experiment with pitch — some practitioners hum at a lower resonant pitch, others at a medium pitch. Both are effective; choose what feels most calming to you.

Why Bhramari May Work

Vagal nerve activation

The extended, vibrating exhalation during Bhramari is thought to stimulate the vagus nerve, supporting a shift from sympathetic (fight-or-flight) toward parasympathetic (rest-and-digest) activity. This is consistent with reductions in heart rate and blood pressure reported in several small studies.

Nasal nitric oxide

Research has found humming substantially increases nasal nitric oxide production compared to silent nasal breathing (Weitzberg & Lundberg, 2002). Nitric oxide is a vasodilator that supports blood flow and has some antimicrobial properties in the nasal passages, which may partly explain reports of benefit for sinus congestion.

Brainwave activity

Some EEG research suggests Bhramari practice increases alpha brainwave activity — associated with a relaxed, alert state — though sample sizes in this research are generally small.

Stress hormone response

Regular practice has been associated with reduced markers of sympathetic nervous system activation in small studies, consistent with the broader evidence base for parasympathetic-activating breathing practices generally.

What the Research Shows

Heart rate and blood pressure

A study in the Nepal Medical College Journal (Pramanik et al., 2010) found that a single session of slow-paced Bhramari practice significantly reduced blood pressure and heart rate in healthy adults. Randomized trials in people with hypertension have found reductions in blood pressure and improved heart rate variability with regular practice over several weeks — a 2017 systematic review (Kuppusamy et al.) summarizes this literature, noting the studies are generally small and would benefit from larger, more rigorous trials.

Sleep and stress

Many practitioners report easier sleep onset with pre-sleep Bhramari practice, consistent with its parasympathetic-activating effect, though direct sleep-outcome research on Bhramari specifically is limited.

Focus and attention

Alpha-wave changes are generally associated with improved attention in the broader research literature; Bhramari-specific cognitive studies are smaller but point in the same direction.

Who Should Be Cautious

  • People with an active ear infection — the vibration and any ear-closing (Shanmukhi Mudra) can be uncomfortable and are best avoided until it clears.
  • People with tinnitus — start with very short sessions. Some report improvement, others notice temporarily heightened awareness of the ringing; stop if it feels worse.
  • Pregnant women — the basic humming breath is generally considered fine, but skip Shanmukhi Mudra and check with an experienced prenatal instructor.

Bhramari doesn’t involve breath retention, forceful breathing, or hyperventilation, which makes it gentler than some other pranayama techniques (compare with the more physically demanding Kapalbhati, which has real contraindications).

Building a Practice

  • Morning: Before meditation or yoga, to settle the mind before the day starts.
  • After work: A few minutes as a transition from work stress to home.
  • Before bed: 5–7 rounds around 20–30 minutes before sleep.
  • In an acutely stressful moment: Even a few rounds can produce a noticeable shift.
