Quick answer: The best milk for weight loss is the one that fits your overall intake and keeps you full. Skim or 1% dairy milk and unsweetened soy milk give the most protein per calorie, while unsweetened almond milk is lowest in calories but has only about 1 g of protein per cup. In trials, extra dairy helped only when people also reduced calories. Babies under 12 months should not drink cow’s milk or plant milks as a main drink.
Choosing milk for weight loss comes down to calories, protein and what else you eat. Milk is a food as well as a drink, so it counts toward your daily total. Therefore, compare options on the same serving size before you switch. For wider context, see our guide to macronutrients and weight loss.

Which Milk for Weight Loss Has the Fewest Calories?
Table 1 compares one cup (8 fluid ounces) of common milks. Calcium percentages use the current Daily Value of 1,300 mg.
| Milk, 1 cup | Calories | Protein | Calcium, % DV |
|---|---|---|---|
| Whole dairy | 149 | 7.7 g | 21% |
| 2% dairy | 122 | 8.1 g | 23% |
| 1% dairy | 102 | 8.2 g | 23% |
| Skim (fat-free) dairy | 83 | 8.3 g | 23% |
| Soy, unsweetened | 80 | 7 g | Check label |
| Almond, unsweetened | 37 | 1 g | Check label |
| Oat, unsweetened | 118 | 2 g | Check label |
| Canned coconut milk (cooking) | 552 | 5.5 g | 3% |
Skim milk gives the most protein per calorie among dairy milks, with 8.3 g in 83 calories. Unsweetened soy milk comes close at 7 g in 80 calories. In contrast, unsweetened almond milk has about 37 calories but just 1 g of protein. Flavoured versions change the picture, because entries in the same table ranged from 73 to 150 calories per cup.
Does Dairy Help in Weight-Loss Trials?
Randomized trials give a nuanced answer. A 2012 meta-analysis found dairy lowered body weight in energy-restricted or short-term trials, but not in long-term or unrestricted ones. A 2020 overview of six systematic reviews, covering 58 trials, agreed. Without energy restriction, dairy had no effect on weight or body composition.
With energy restriction, results favoured dairy. One meta-analysis of adults aged 18 to 50 found about 1.2 kg more weight loss with two to four dairy servings a day. Note that most participants were women, and the abstract lists a dairy industry consortium as funder. Overall, milk is not a fat burner, yet it can be a useful protein source if you are already adjusting your intake.
Why Does Coconut Milk Mean Both 45 and 552 Calories?
Two different products share one name. Canned coconut milk, used in cooking, lists 552 calories, 5.5 g protein and 57.2 g fat per cup. A carton coconut milk drink lists about 45 calories and 0 g of protein, according to a pediatric nutrition summary. Neither has more protein than dairy milk, which provides 7.7 to 8.3 g per cup.
Hemp milk shows similar variation. The same summary lists about 60 calories, 3 g protein and 4.5 g fat per cup, yet brands differ. Therefore, read the label rather than relying on a category average.
Cow, Buffalo and Amul Milk in India
Amul products are sold in India, so this section applies mainly to Indian readers. Indian standards define full-cream milk at 6.0% fat, toned milk at 3.0% and double-toned milk at 1.5%. Amul Taaza is toned milk, with at least 3.0% fat and about 58 calories and 3.0 g protein per 100 ml. Amul Slim n Trim is double-toned, with at least 1.5% fat. Amul Gold is sold as full-cream milk.
Pack colours vary by dairy and region, so read the fat percentage, not the colour. Buffalo milk is more energy dense than cow milk. Per 100 g, buffalo milk has roughly 6.8 to 8.8 g of fat and 3.6 to 4.9 g of protein, against 3.7 g and 3.4 g for cow milk. However, lactose is similar, at about 4.8 g in both.
Milk for Weight Loss and Children: US and UK Rules Differ
This advice is for adults. Babies and young children follow different rules, and they differ between countries.
- Under 12 months: The American Academy of Pediatrics says babies should not get cow’s milk, other animal milks or milk substitutes as a main drink. Breast milk or infant formula comes first. Toned, skim and plant milks are not baby milks.
- US, ages 1 to 2: The AAP says not to give 1% or fat-free milk before the second birthday.
- UK: Whole milk can be the main drink from age 1. Semi-skimmed can start at 2 if the child eats well. Skimmed and 1% milk should not be a main drink until age 5, and rice drinks should not be given under 5 because of arsenic.
What the Evidence Says About Milk for Weight Loss Claims
| Claim you may see | Where it stands | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Milk burns fat faster | Overstated | Dairy helped only in energy-restricted or short-term trials, and by modest amounts. |
| Toned or skim milk suits babies | Not safe | The AAP and UK guidance say no cow’s milk as a main drink under 12 months, and no skimmed or 1% milk for young children. |
| Buffalo milk has more carbohydrate than cow milk | Not supported | Lactose is similar, about 4.8 g per 100 g. Buffalo milk has more fat. |
| Coconut milk has more protein than cow’s milk | Not supported | Canned coconut milk lists 5.5 g and carton coconut drinks about 0 g, against 7.7 to 8.3 g in dairy milk. |
| Hemp milk is almost carbohydrate free | Check the label | Brands vary, and sweetened versions exist. |
| Almond milk is the single best choice | Overstated | It is lowest in calories but also lowest in protein. The best choice depends on your goals. |
| Drink milk in the morning for weight loss | Not supported | No trial evidence found for a best time of day. |
| One pack colour is best for weight loss | Not verified | Colours vary by dairy and region. Read the fat percentage instead. |
Who Should Check Before Changing Milk?
- People with lactose intolerance should note that buffalo milk also contains lactose.
- People with a cow’s milk allergy need medical advice before trying any other animal milk.
- People who rely on milk for calcium should check that plant milks are fortified.
- Parents should follow the age rules above, and ask a pediatrician about any child’s weight.
- If counting calories feels stressful, or you have a history of disordered eating, talk to a clinician first.
Milk for Weight Loss: Frequently Asked Questions
No single milk wins. Skim or 1 percent dairy milk and unsweetened soy milk give the most protein per calorie, while unsweetened almond milk has the fewest calories. Choose the one that fits your overall intake.
Skim milk has 83 calories per cup against 149 for whole milk, with slightly more protein. However, trials show dairy helps weight loss only alongside reduced overall intake.
Unsweetened almond milk is very low in calories, at about 37 per cup, but it has only about 1 g of protein. It can fit a plan, yet it will not keep you full the way higher protein milks might.
Unsweetened oat milk lists about 118 calories and 2 g of protein per cup in a National Dairy Council chart, so it is more energy dense than soy or almond milk. Read labels, because sweetened versions add more.
Unsweetened soy milk lists about 80 calories and 7 g of protein per cup, which is close to dairy milk. Choose unsweetened and, if you rely on milk for calcium, a fortified product.
No trial evidence shows that the time of day matters. Total intake across the day is what counts.
Amul Slim n Trim is double toned, with at least 1.5 percent fat. Amul Taaza has at least 3.0 percent, and Amul Gold is full cream. These products are sold in India only.
No. The American Academy of Pediatrics says babies should not get cow’s milk as a main drink before 12 months, and not 1 percent or fat-free milk before age 2. UK guidance says skimmed and 1 percent milk are not main drinks until age 5.
Cow milk is lower in fat, at about 3.7 g per 100 g against roughly 6.8 to 8.8 g for buffalo milk. Lactose is similar in both, at about 4.8 g per 100 g.
